Having the right ground pad is just as important as picking the right sleeping bag, but not just because it`s more comfortable to sleep on: the filling of a sleeping bag is compressed by the weight of the body (goose down more so than synthetic fibres), thereby negating its insulation properties because the filling is no longer free to loft and trap warm air. A ground pad is therefore essential for keeping warm when it`s really cold outside.
