In the land of the forest deer, Salamajärvi is located in the rugged and beautiful Suomenselkä watershed, which is known for its diverse marshland, wolverines and thousands of forest deer. Many grave pits and stove mounds tell the story of the history of tar burning in the primeval area of the Koirajoi River. The Deer Trail is a 77-kilometer network of trails, along which you can stay overnight in tents, lean-tos, huts and rented cabins. From the nature towers you can observe wading birds, such as the mountain goat, the moorhen, the common cuckoo, the white-tailed eagle and the common grebe. Cloudberries and cranberries grow in the forests.
