Getting jiggy with it
First things first: We celebrate the midsummer festivities this week with the following exceptions on our store openings:
• Friday 25.6.2021 (Midsummer Eve) Helsinki store and customer service are closed
• Saturday 26.6.2021 (Midsummer's Day) Helsinki store and customer service are closed
• Sunday 27.6.2021 is a normal Sunday and we are open again normally 12-18.
While waiting for summer holidays many fishermen, -women and -individuals are probably quite eager to go out fishin'.
The season for jigging perch and pike perch is on NOW! Even though it is early summer waters have warmed to reasonably levels.
What do I need to go jigging perch / pike?
1) Rod. A good jig rod has just the right rigidity (the rod may be even a bit sensitive) for this job. You want to have a good charge and energy transfer after casting to make good swim moves for the jig.
The decision which ro to pick is influenced by the fisherman's height, taste, preference and budget.
2) Line. Since you really want to a tender feeling on wha's going on at the bottom, you should choose a static fiber line.
A static line does not give up or stretch and that makes it very sensitive. The thinner the line, the better (light jigs fly further). Fiber lines have an amazing tensile strength.
Please note that in jigging, the lure often swims with it's line and bumpes on to rocks and other sharp things.
So please remember to regularly check the condition of the line and if there is any tearing or wear, nip the bad part out of the line and tie the lure lock again to a fresh, intact line. NOTE!! Always remember to take any fishing line bits with you and never leave anything on the beach.
3) Reel. Any reel that fits your taste is good. The reel does not have to be large at all - we are talking about a 2000/2500 size class approx.
Jig tail selection
There are many types of jig lures. There are jigs wit a curly tail, paddle tale, jigs that mimic worms, nymphs, caterpillars, small crustaceans. They look surprisingly realistic in the water!
So. Where should you go jigging?
Deep spots are good, benches, straits, ridges, reefs, rocks, islets. Anything that has a sudden change in the depth curve. Now, depending on the temperature, it’s worth to seek and check out if there's any cood places where to expect for a thermocline - usually this goes hand in hand with the depth curves of course.
A sonar may be useful, or then use your unbeliavable hunch / clairvoyance to determine the best place.
We wish you a very nice, peaceful and active Midsummer!
Enjoy the summer wetehr it's raining or shining, as Midsummer comes only once in a year.
As a final reminder:
• Midsummer Eve, Friday 25.6.: Helsinki store is closed
• Midsummer's Day, Saturday 26.6 .: Helsinki store is closed
• Sunday 27.6.: open 12-18
Have fun everyone and stay outside! It's the best place to be.
Happy Midsummer,
