Previously, Salomon's winter studs were Spikecross, which had a more spike-like stud shape (here more star-like) and the front of the shoe was even further forward than the front, which is why the model seems to bite better on completely icy surfaces. On the other hand, the Icehero 2 grip is a little slower - letting the foot slip a little. Eventually it bites enough. Once you learn this and trust it, you'll do well. I think it works best on relatively flat winter sand roads, which are partly icy, partly melted. Pretty good on winter asphalt too.
