New Year’s Eve with dogs

Away from fireworks

We spend New Year’s Eves traditionally in forests, preferably as remote and deep as possible. Why? Because we have two dogs and one of them is extremely afraid of fireworks.

Every year, the plan is to find some nice outdoor destination where we can spend the whole day. This year we decided to go to the Luukki recreational area, Espoo, and do The Trail of the Seven Ponds.

In addition to the fact that the trail is interesting to hike, it opens a whole new world for geocachers. There are a lot of caches around the ponds, and the set is genuinely nice. Without hesitation, I can recommend it as a day trip destination to anyone.

All the ponds on this trail are different, and there are different stories behind each of them.

1) Hepolampi (“Horse Lake” in English, because it was used as a drinking place for horses.
People have been fishing there forever, and it has been said that there are dugout canoes lying at the bottom, but I didn’t see any)

2) Hauklampi (the main photo of this article was taken there)

3) Kierlampi (shallow, smallish pond)

4) Mustalampi (jet black marshy pond)

5) Väärälampi (we made some coffee here)

6) Halkolampi (great campfire spots, we ate our lunch here)

7) Kaitalampi (a famous swimming place, has also many campfire spots. Near a car park, BUT it means there are always a lot of people here)

In addition to the caches that belonged to the set of the Trail of the Seven Ponds, there were a few bonus caches that were nice to find.

The trip was versatile with many different views and landscapes, and it felt like we had been gone longer than we actually were. It is easy to orient in this area if you walk along the paths and follow the signs. But if you want to step off the path and wander in the forest, a GPS won’t be an unnecessary device.

When we got back home, the dogs were tired, and the owners invigorated. We enjoyed our champagne at the balcony admiring the fireworks, while the dogs were hiding inside, sleeping.
