Steel HR is the first activity tracker with heart rate monitoring to offer a long-lasting battery life of 25 days, all housed in a classic watch style perfect for transitioning from the gym to the office to a night out. Plus stay connected with smartphone notifications that appear right on the watch screen, and enjoy the latest activity recognition features launched in Health Mate.
Easy & Intuitive HR Monitoring
During workouts, see your heart rate at a glance. After, assess your overall performance with a personalized in-app report that delivers insights on maximum heart rate and time spent in each heart rate zone.
Steel HR uses a technology called PPG (photoplethysmography). This technology uses light absorbed through the skin by the blood to measure pulsatile variation in flow in the blood vessels. By measuring the pulsatile – or rhythmic – change in flow of the blood, heart rate can be determined. Withings uses green LEDs to project light at the blood at high frequency and uses photodiodes to detect variations in blood flow – all through the skin around your wrist. Algorithms then analyze data from the photodiodes to calculate heart rate at various intervals and at various times (e.g. with workouts and at rest). In order to measure heart rates in all conditions, we also use signals from a built-in accelerometer to understand your level of activity for accurate measurements.
- WORKOUT MODE
The first type is continuous and corresponds to workout mode, and it measures and records heart rate every second. This measurement type is activated automatically when the watch detects running or when the user activates Workout mode by pressing and holding the button.
- SMART MODE
To preserve battery life, we’ve developed a second measurement type that measures heart rate at regular intervals (about every 10 minutes) to record your daily heart rate trend. The accompanying app then provides a heart rate graph over time, which is useful for understanding trends and tracking progress.
