Running shoes by surface

Many people choose running shoes based solely on looks or an attractive offer, but the most important selection criterion is often overlooked: the running surface. The features of the shoe have a decisive impact on your running experience and foot health. Shoes designed for trail running do not provide enough comfort or cushioning on asphalt, and conversely, road running shoes do not offer the necessary grip and protection on trails.

If you mainly run on asphalt, choose shoes with effective cushioning and a smooth, rolling sole—this will protect your joints and make running feel lighter. For trails and off-road, opt for shoes with a rougher tread, good grip, and sufficient protection from rocks and roots. This way, you’ll avoid slipping and keep your feet safe on uneven terrain.

When choosing a headlamp, prioritize light output

For basic camping and outdoor life, 100–200 lumens is usually enough, but for running and cycling, choose a headlamp with 300–600 lumens or more. A wide beam improves visibility around you and enables safe movement even in uneven terrain. Good battery life ensures the light won’t go out in the middle of your trip, and adjustable brightness lets you optimize the amount of light for different situations. For changing weather conditions, choose a waterproof headlamp (IPX rating). A quality headlamp works reliably in rain, snow, and fog.

Base layer by activity

Base layers are available in a variety of materials, each with its own strengths. Cotton absorbs moisture and cools you down easily, so it’s not suitable for sweaty activities or cold conditions. Synthetic materials dry quickly and wick moisture efficiently, making them an excellent choice for intense sports—though on long trips, they may feel uncomfortable against the skin. Many don’t know that merino wool is an excellent year-round option. In warm weather, it breathes and cools, while in cold weather it warms—even when wet. The natural structure and properties of merino wool prevent odors, making it ideal for longer trips and active users.

Winter jacket: consider length, fill, and waterproofness

When choosing a winter jacket, looks and the amount of insulation may catch your attention, but true comfort depends above all on the length, quality of the fill, and waterproofness. A long jacket protects effectively from wind and cold but can be cumbersome for active movement. Choose a shorter model if you want more freedom of movement. Down is very light and warm but loses its insulation when wet. Synthetic fill retains its insulating ability even when wet and dries quickly. For waterproofness, a water-repellent surface alone is not enough! Make sure the jacket’s water column value is at least 10,000 mm, seams are taped, and the jacket has a waterproof membrane—this way you’ll stay dry even in heavy rain and slush.
