Compact, light, and with a wide range of possible applications, the BASE provides an entry point into the world of ORTOVOX avalanche airbags. The removable ABS airbag system M.A.S.S. (Modular Airbag Safety System) is a standard feature that enables the system to be adapted to prevailing conditions. With an anatomical shape and a lean silhouette, the BASE was designed especially for freeride tours and day ski tours. A TÜV-certified back protector can also be integrated for optimum protection. 

The BASE has two compartments: A large, colored inner compartment (increases visibility) with separate fixing options for emergency equipment, and a further front compartment. The main compartment is accessed from the front. The trigger can be mounted on the left or the right backpack strap. The height and angle of the trigger can be adjusted for easier access; the locking aluminum clasp provides a safeguard against accidental activation. Skis, snowboards or snowshoes can be attached quickly and easily using the X-Skifix system. Locking aluminum buckles and hypalon belts provide the necessary robustness. Skis can be mounted crosswise or diagonally. A pick holder, a chest strap with signal whistle, a camera/cell phone pocket on the hip belt, water-repellent zippers and a Polygiene finish that provides lasting protection against odors are all standard features of the BASE.

Just a few motions and only three minutes is all it takes to install the M.A.S.S. unit into any of the five backpack models. If conditions allow, installing the airbag system can be entirely avoided. In such cases the backpacks are up to 1880 grams lighter and gain several liters in additional volume - making them suitable for a broader spectrum of uses. What's more, the adjustment options prove just as versatile as the system itself. The release grip can be in-stalled for either right or left-handed users and ist height and angle can be freely adjusted. A stowable aluminum bracket protects the grip from unintended release.
