With the fabrics I've tried, there is almost no beading of water on the surface of the fabric, but the drops are absorbed directly into the fabric in both softshells and windbreakers. Maybe it speeds up drying a little because the fibers don't shrink so badly, but it's a pretty marginal benefit. Immediately after the heat treatment, it was a little more resistant, but after a couple of days of hanging on the hanger, it was as if it had never been impregnated.
Based on the performance, I don't understand why Nikwax is very popular, maybe because of its environmental friendliness, but I would rather not use useless chemicals even if they are environmentally friendly.
