Avalanche! - Avalanche guide for downhill skiers and free skiers. Is it safe to calculate from this?
Avalanche! is written for those of you who love free-falling and climbing snow peaks, i.e. for you who have to determine for yourself whether the descent in front of you is safe. It helps you assess avalanche risks, reduce the risks you face and save your skiing buddies. An entire chapter is dedicated to the risky behavior of skiers, as the topic has attracted great interest around the world in recent years.
The structure of the book is based on a risk model called the avalanche triangle, which was developed by the Canadian Avalanche Association. Information on human factors related to avalanche accidents, new international guidelines for rescue operations and support for decision-making have been added to the Finnish edition. Three of the avalanche accidents described in the book are from Finland.
Author Mårten Johansson has been working on avalanche safety for the past 15 years. He heads the Avalanche Safety Center in Åre, where information about avalanches and avalanche accidents is collected. The book has been checked by our country's leading avalanche experts Eeva Mäkelä and Jussi Muittari.
