In my opinion, the best open top magazine pouches, fits 7.62x39 and 5.56 magazines. The magazines stay on tightly and come off easily by pulling.

Own pouches are used for AR magazines, works great with both metal and plastic magazines (Magpul), the magazines fit tightly in the case. With PALS, easy attachment directly to the esmes plate carrier, but they also fit well on a belt.
