Keeps food warm. For your own use, the thermos is at room temperature. If the contents contain some kind of boiling soup, then at 6 o'clock the mouth still burns. Even more solid foods such as a properly heated macaroni and minced meat sauce in the microwave are a little cooler at the same time, but you still find that you eat warm food, and not just lukewarm. The effect of thermos preheating (with boiling water) was correctly measured. From the first hour onwards, the difference was only one degree in favor of the preheated thermos, and the difference remained the same throughout the 8-hour measurement. So I don't bother to preheat anymore.
