I was looking for a large, waterproof backpack, backpack, sack or bag to carry the packraft and equipment that I could also carry on my back. After learning about the different options, I ended up buying a Big Zip because the long zipper makes it easier to pack than a sack, and the shape is such that it’s easy to pack quite full. On packraft trips, I carry the following items as standard inside the Big Zip: packraft rolled up, packraft seat and footrest as well as an aperture cover ring, a “spray skirt” to be attached to the aperture cover, a four-part folding paddle, a drinking bottle, a packraft bow bag, a buoyancy vest, a neoprene suit; a tarpaulin on which I empty the packraft, goretex pants and jacket, a kayaking hat and kayaking gloves. If you wear a life jacket and a neoprene suit in your hand, they can be replaced by a Hilleberg tent, an inflatable sleeping pad and a sleeping bag inside the Big Zip. The Big Zip holds an incredible amount of stuff and thanks to the padded shoulder straps, it is comfortable to carry from the parking lot to the beach for a slightly longer distance. Once the goods have been unloaded from the Big Zip, they can be rolled to fit inside the packraft from the rear cargo fly zipper. I would highly recommend this to anyone who owns a packraft and needs a transportation and storage solution that can hold everything you need in one place. Rarely is any product perfect, of course, and there would be room for improvement in the Big Zip as well: although it has good straps, it does not have a hip belt, and I would add fastening rings to the top (when carried on the back).
