Kuusamo shared forest Freeride snowmobile permit: Ölky Martinluoma plot permit area, approximately 7,600 ha.
The permit area has diverse wilderness landscapes for snowmobiling. The area contains many types of forests and also has many open bogs and slopes.
Please ensure that the conditions in the area are suitable for freeride sledding before purchasing a permit. The snow cover in Kuusamo this early winter has been thinner than usual and the ice cover on the lakes is exceptionally uneven.
The permit is personal. The number of sledders is limited by a daily sales quota.
The boundaries of the permit area can be downloaded to your phone, for example, in the free Tracker application with the My Game IDs, which are displayed on the permit map (in Tracker, Maps-My Game-add Area ID).
More detailed weatherproof outdoor maps showing permit areas can be purchased from the Kuusamo Public Forest office at arja.mustonen@kuusamonyhteimestsa.fi or by phone at 040 750 0026.
Driving and parking instructions
The road leading to the permit area from the west (road 5) has been plowed, including the parking area. The Kuusamo Community Forest is not responsible for plowing the roads leading to the area from the east.
With a freeride permit, you can also ride on other than marked trails and tracks, but only if you do not cause damage to nature. When sledding, you must be especially careful with trees and animals; for example, in small saplings where the length of the tree is less than 5 meters, riding is absolutely prohibited. Saplings are forests with young trees with a tree length of less than 7 meters. A small sapling can be invisible below the surface of the snow, making it particularly susceptible to damage, and riding in these is absolutely prohibited! Saplings, like other trees, are of great economic importance to the landowner, so respect the landowner's property. Destruction of saplings or other forest owner's property results in liability for compensation.
Driving all animals is strictly prohibited and must not cause any harm to reindeer herding. There are roads in the permit area that are occasionally plowed in winter.
The Kuusamo Community Forest operates forestry in its areas all year round and snowmobilers must always park their cars in a way that allows a timber truck to pass them. If the snowmobiler causes damage to the landowner or a third party through their actions, they are personally liable for the damage.
Snowmobiling in the permit area is always at the snowmobiler's own risk. The permit area has diverse terrain, so there are also many potential hazards for snowmobilers. Dangerous situations can arise from, for example, steep slopes, weak ice, and rocks or stumps under the snow and other obstacles. Keep driving speeds moderate, wear a helmet and other protective equipment, track your location on the map, and always try to snowmobil with a friend! Take snowshoes, warm clothing, and snacks with you in case your snowmobile breaks down.
Unauthorized sledding is always reported to the police. A permit must be carried with you when sledding in the countryside.
Freeride sledding in the areas is monitored. If inappropriate behavior is observed in the permit area, the sale of permits for the area may be stopped completely and the area may be closed to sledding. You are responsible for the continuity of freeride activities!
