Smooth surface, so it's good to drink both with and without the lid, because there are no threads (the lid stays on with the friction of the rubber seals). The lid's drinking opening is not completely sealed, but mainly prevents spilling when holding it in the hand or in the car's cup holder, but when tipped/poured, liquids do come out, even if the drinking opening is closed. The drink won't stay warm forever, but a nice plus of the thermos mug is that the outside of the cup stays cool and doesn't burn the buttons.

Very good. Smooth edge, good to drink from, because there are no threads (the lid is held by the friction of the seals). In the car, the cover helps against spills, but I wouldn't guarantee that it will stay closed if it falls/drops.
