Hello beginner, or future runner!

Our mission at Varuste.net is to inspire and help people make better choices. We want to show through our actions that it's never too late to start a new sport, change a hobby, or even aim for the top! As a subscriber to Varuste.net's newsletter, you always get more. As a March benefit, we offer a comprehensive running guide that compiles everything a future runner should consider to ensure their enthusiasm for running doesn't fade at the starting line.

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH RUNNING?

Starting a running hobby is a great way to improve fitness and enjoy the outdoors. The first logical step is to get good running shoes that support your feet and prevent injuries. The choice of shoes should be based on fit and comfort, but also on the running surface. Once you have the shoes, you're basically ready to plan and experience your first run.

MUST HAVE: Proper shoes

If you plan to run mainly on roads and streets, we recommend choosing shoes for hard surfaces with cushioning that protects, for example, your knees from excessive strain. If you prefer running on trails and uneven terrain, opt for trail running shoes with reinforced toes and a grippier sole.

If the ground is icy – as it often tends to be here in Finland even until April – you can improve traction with studded running shoes or by adding separate traction devices to your shoes during the run. If there is a lot of gravel left from winter on the roads, it might be wise to protect your ankles with gaiters that prevent stones, as well as slush and snow, from getting into your shoes. Choose technical running socks that prevent chafing and support the foot. Good socks can significantly enhance the running experience. The use of compression socks is a personal choice, and their benefits can vary individually. They can affect circulation, temperature regulation, and muscle recovery, as long as the size is chosen correctly. Many runners find that they improve performance and comfort.

We also recommend appropriate reflectors for runners, even though the days are already wonderfully getting longer here in the Nordic countries.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD YOU CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING GEAR?

As always, the level of equipment depends mostly on the runner's own preferences. Some want to just get out and run and expand their gear later, while others need street-credible gear from head to toe to support their motivation. We listed the gear according to what is absolutely necessary (and even that is debatable) and what can be acquired later when you've really gotten into running and perhaps found that they add extra enjoyment to the workout.

MUST HAVE: Running shoes

NICE TO HAVE:

  • App, training guide, or running school
  • There are certainly running programs, tips, and coaches for every need. The most important thing is to understand that there is no one right way to start running. Trust yourself and your own feelings! It's important to keep the pace slow (read: very slow) at first. Running fitness develops at different heart rate zones, so it's important to start at lower heart rates (feels easy) and only after about 1-2 weeks increase the pace and variety in speed and perhaps the length of the run.
  • Weather-resistant and/or suitable training clothes. The right material is everything! We recommend choosing technical materials for running that wick moisture away from the skin and dry quickly. Avoid cotton, as it absorbs moisture and can cause chafing, especially on long runs.

There is no bad running weather, only inappropriate gear! So dress according to the weather. In cold weather, layering is key: use a breathable base layer (technical sports shirt), a warming mid-layer (merino wool set), and a windproof outer layer (jacket). In hot weather, lightweight and breathable clothes are best. Avoid clothes with thick seams or other chafing points. If you run in warm weather with minimal clothing, it's wise to apply anti-chafing cream to the inner thighs, armpits, etc. (trust me, you don't want to experience that pain)! You can also use tapes designed to prevent chafing.

Clothes should be comfortable and the right size. Clothes that are too tight can restrict movement, while clothes that are too loose can cause chafing. Choose clothes that protect you from the sun, wind, and rain. For example, a cap or hat can protect from the sun, and a lightweight windbreaker can protect from wind and rain. If you need to carry keys, a phone, or energy gels during the run, choose clothes with suitable pockets or storage spaces. A running vest is also a great help, as it conveniently carries hydration and, if necessary, other extra energy and personal belongings.

If you run in dim or dark conditions, make sure your clothes have reflective elements so you are visible to other road users. An easy life insurance is a reflective vest. Especially when running in the dark on trails, equip yourself with a headlamp!

FOR THE PRO:

For more demanding and comfortable jogging with gear, there is a huge range of accessories, all of which you can find at Varuste.net! WHERE TO FIND HELP FOR THE RIGHT TRAINING?

Start slowly: alternate between walking and running, for example, 1 minute of running and 2 minutes of walking. The most important thing is to listen to your body and progress at your own pace. Remember to warm up before the run and stretch afterward. Set realistic goals for yourself and keep track of your progress. Running is an act that supports your well-being, not a competition, so enjoy every step!
