Why do shoes with GORE-TEX® Lining need care?

Basically the uppers of all shoes - even those with GORE-TEX® lining - require care in order to maintain their appearance and condition over time. No shoe care product damages the GORE-TEX® membrane, but the breathability of the upper material can be significantly reduced if unsuitable shoe care products are used. You have bought a high quality shoe or boot with the GORE-TEX® membrane that should have a long life, and that you enjoy wearing for a long time. The proper care determines the longevity and also the appearance of the shoes. Only through proper, regular care can the upper leather of a shoe maintain its elasticity, shine, suppleness. In contrast, any upper leather which is not properly cared for, will eventually become dry, and especially in areas where the leather flexes during wear, the leather will shrink and crack. Basically, if not properly cared for, the upper leather of shoes will have a relatively short life.

Important:

Water repellent treatment and care are not necessary for the GORE-TEX® waterproof, breathable membrane, but rather for the uppers and this helps protect the uppers through:

- improving the dirt resistance;
- preventing heavy soggy shoes;
- maintaining warmth as the dry upper material insulates better than a wet upper material;
- avoiding water absorption from the outside near the sole to the top of the upper , which
then travels down into the inside of the shoe; this also applies to shoe laces!

- Only through proper, regular care (in addition to water repellent treatment) can the upper leather of a shoe maintain its elasticity, shine and suppleness over a long time. The leather won`t become brittle, and therefore won`t crack.
